FreeICE Frontend (write my own ?)

------------------------------------------------

Been thinking for a bit about writing my own frontend. I have done most of the coding already what with freefone and my web page thing.. now on the rrscreen2 I've done the windows media player bit.. so I have just about coded one up already but in bits. It would only really be a small step to go one further... but the question is would it be used ? There are so many out there already does it seem quite pointless ?

If I were to do one then it would be based on windows media player, so it would be able to do audio and video on a single screen. It would use wmp's playlists so you could add afew tunes then a music video, then some more tunes... etc. It would also play HD stuff and DVD's by default as well. I would include freefone and also my web code. The gps would be done by embedding it give people the widest options there... (D6 being my prefered choice at the mo)

The idea would be that its just simple to use, nothing fancy really.

Because it would have a flash based frontend the software would be able to resize.. as for skiinning, yep but only in fllash.

comments / ideas ?

If it can do DVD's/MP3's/Videos with ease then I'd use it

But don't make it too heavy on flash please

I am sure if you did it then it would work great as everything else you have done works. For me though I wouldn't use it as flash is just too heavy for any kit I would want to put in a car.

What have you got to lose? Personally I love Roadrunner, although not many skins out there appeal to me.

I think a fully completed professional looking skin on this potential new software would warrent a lot of interest from people on here.

Good luck anyway - will follow this with interest!

If you did then i'm sure it would be the dog's danglies,i don't think i've seen you give anything less than 110% on any of your many projects so i say Go For It.

Anyway forget all that and come and re-engineer Freedom 2.1 for me instead, lol.

I would definately be interested as going through your past work it is bound to be impressive.

As long as it would have the core functionality that i am looking for:
Dual screen capabilities,
I could send it commands from a powermate
Embedd GPS - freedrive or other

I remeber when Frodo Player was based on wmp and that seemed very good so why not.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Be prepared to now have absolutely everyone ask you about it all the time, and always expect it to be done yesterday, because you've now both mentioned actually doing it, and making it available to others.

That's the mistake myself and Andrew made - we told people about it and when other things have come up, or we've lost motivation, no one else seems to care, because they expect you to be doing it 24/7 and have it released already...

;)

Think long and hard buddy.

It will be a lot of work and a lot of time. look how many questions you had over FreeDrive and Destinator 6, and how much time it takes asking all those question.

Plus all those rerquests for more, more, more.

You do quality work, but I don't want to see you start a front end and then find you just haven't got the time to put into it, and therfore maybe lose a bit of your reputation.

I also agree that I wouldn't want too much (read any) flash in a front end. Don't know if anyone has noticed I am reluctant to have any flash in my skins or website. It too easily can become a resource hog.

However I wish you well whatever you decide to do

CDR - The question is do you have time... and what will your FE do that others dont.... ie We need a decent GPS and its not really going to help there.

IMHO - I'd carry on supporting plugins and may be do some dam good stuff for Karputer if they want any thing seening as they have a plugin system & SDK. ( Plus IF they can hurry up it will be the best FE for the UK.... )
