Hand Gestures

I've been working on getting hand gestures working. Here's a couple of teaser images to show progress:

I've so far done some processing to extract the hand from the image, detect the edge, and I'm now working on profiling the gestures so they can be differentiated. I've found a very efficient way to do it using only a single pass and over parts of the image only, which means low end machines have a good chance of running it.

I've also got an exchange working which takes in a sequence of hand gestures and allows you to map those to any function. A little more work is required to allow the user to record gestures, making it easier to define them.

Currently this is being developed as a Velocity plugin, but I may do a standalone version at some point.

In the car the background is going to be a lot harder to work with, ie very different brightness levels, plus the motion.

I would suggest you do your testing at least a window behind half the hand.

good point. I've got in mind to use a night vision camera with exposure and focus set to fixed values. This will ensure light levels are in short proximity, and are always front lit.

also, motion effect is eliminated since the profile works on the finger/palm configuration, and not their position

as long as some strong light can be shone on the hand, visible or not, it should make the hand very visible. In the test images I'm using, I used a flash to overexpose the hand.

I'm pretty sure the lighting issue can be solved in the cabin. Might be slightly more difficult for convertibles but that bridge can be crossed in due time :)
