Velocity - Alpha Release

Current Version = 0.6a

If this is the first time you're downloading Velocity, then you first need to ensure you have:

The latest Java Runtime Environment

Just install them all in their default directories. Once done, then get:

Download installer

You can install there anywhere you like, but c:\velocity is easiest to get to.

To run it, go to c:\velocity (wherever you installed it) and double click on velocity.jar.

Known issues are here, please report any new bugs here.

-- ORIGINAL POST SNIP --

Please note this is an ALPHA release and is undergoing some heavy changes.

So far, the performance has been optimised and tested on a P3 1GHz, with 256MB of RAM, an Epia 1000 with 1GB of ram, and a Celeron 1.3GHz with 512MB of RAM, all reported to perform well.

Velcoity is designed to run at 640x480 or 800x600. If you run at much higher, then it will be slow since Flash has no hardware acceleration. However, I've set Flash to have below normal priority, meaning it's animation will suffer and things like VLC will take precedence. It's worth noting that animations will typically be at a minimum as they will be transition based, this skin is a demo only of Velocity's capabilities.

The installer provided will install:

Velocity
Java Runtime Enviroment
Flash Player 9
VLC

If you then navigate to c:\velocity, and double click on the velocity.bat file

then drag the velocity.swf file and drop it onto the SAFlashPlayer.exe

This should launch a swinging monkey. It may take a second or two on slower systems for the service to connect. Ideally, you should have 800x600 set, as if you have higher than that, Flash will struggle. It did at 1920x1200 anyway!

Other than that, it's still an alpha release so expect some bugs.

Current known issues are:

- Song length is not always updated. Clicking on the file again seems to do the trick! This is down to missing the vlc broadcast... grrr, threads!

- Song title not always visible. I need to extract this from file/id3 tag based on the one with info.

- DVD's take a short while to launch. This is beacuse VLC builds up some info about a dvd before running it. I can't do anything about this sadly, but it's not too bad, just be a little patient. Perhaps I can notify the user that the play DVD request has been launched.

If you have any problems whilst running, like the file view disapearing or something, close all the windows (escape exists full screen flash), then press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and make sure that the Java and VLC processes are both killed. Then please send me a copy of the debug.log in c:\velocity directory with a breif description of what happened, what you did, etc.

you can then restart the server, then the swf.

I'm working on the means to launch just the java process, which will manage flash instances as well, but Flash security is a bit of a pain.

I'm especially interested in lower end systems, and how the whole vlc/flash/java combination performs.

I've finally got my act together and I'm back onto development.

A new version is released with a prettier skin and lots of framework improvements. The skin is also configurable, it's still also under development but I think it shows better what velocity can do.

please see the the download page for details, and post bugs here.

Well it works. I can add all files within a folder but can I add all files within folders within a folder?

It looks awesome for an alpha too!

ah I see what you mean. so if you highlight a folder, then click add, you want it to add that folder's contents, and all subdirectory contents?

it's easy stuff to do really, just need to agree on what users would like, and how to do it (double click, click and hold to get context menu, etc)

yup. All my music is in music/artist/album and I like it all loaded and on random. Or certain artists only which I can do at the moment.

Yeah double clicking on the directories is a bit of a headache. Single-clicks would be nice.

(I've found a bug too I think)
