hmmm, ok, really stupid question, as we need to go back to basics, can you pull the memory, blow on the board and clean the memory sections, then load the mem back in, do you have another hdd to try?

yes memory slots are clean and working.

Hdd is a WD scorpio and only about 3 months old. It works fine on my pc in the house.
I've found that my computer only makes the ticking noise if the keyboard is plugged in. I'm going to try a ps2 keyboard. Someone must have thrown something in the boot of the car on top of the keyboard. I think it's faulty.

I'll try another reboot here with the ps2 keyboard plugged in.

I missed something.

The date on the bios was way off so i corrected it and i'm now going to try another boot from cd. I tried a straight boot from the hdd a few minutes ago and got the warning about not having an 80 pin cable. Then it just went on as normal and i got a boot disk failure again.

same problem. HDD isn't found if i'm booting from cd to a windows installation or repair. HDD can be seen from the bios with no problems.

By the way, this is the same case if i boot with or without udma being enabled.

Ok,

So at this point we know that memory is working, hdd is working in other machine, board is booting and then stopping.

I know this is odd but it really sounds like a faulty hdd.

Did you try a totally different hdd in the pc?

Well here I am after an eventful sunday morning rampage on the car pc. I just hadn't been online to update.

So.... after trying everything it now works.

The solution:

I put the HDD on IDE channel 2 and put the DVD drive on channel 1 and booted from the DVD. Low and behold, I was able to start a windows repair install. Now the PC works as it should.

Maybe I could trace back to what settings meant that the hdd would only work in the second slot but I'm quite happy to accept that it simply works.

Thanks for the help. I'm a happy bunny now as I can get on with cleaning the car for the show this weekend.
