    Arduino OBD-II Temperature Display

Right, this is a project that I've been meaning to do for a couple of months, but the rain of the last week has meant I've had some time to spend on it.

The idea came about because the car it's going on has a stuck water temperature gauge and after a bit of fault finding, it found to be somewhere behind the dash. Now i cant be arsed to take out the whole dash, so the OBD-II interface idea was born.

The main components are a Freeduino PCB, a 3 wire serial 4 digit/7 segment LED display, an OBD-II connector and a some components.

Now the original idea was that there would be a ELM32x chip to do the protocol conversion, but that would have been too easy, so I decided to jump in the deep end and write the interface code myself.... loads more fun and it would save at least ten quid, cost of the ELM!

The car uses the ISO 14230-2 so there are just 3 connections in the connector, +12V, 0V and the K-line.

The LED was chosen because it was the right size and the display is nice and bright and because i had one in the "I might need one of those one day" box :)

So, basically It wakes up OBD-II section of the ECU and once communication has been started, askes for and displays the water temperature every four seconds. It displays between -40 and +215 degrees C

Things for the future, all no big deal.
1,Alter brightness of display either by illumination wire or by LDR, phototransistor etc.
2,Flash when temp is outside normal operation limits.
3,4,etc and some other things that escape me now i come to write about it.

Or use the line to the HU-ISO that says whether the lights are on? You could send it to the chip, or some kind of electronic method

Pin 6 - illumination - +12v input to the radio when the car's lights are on
